Character Challenge

Journal Entry: Sun Jan 11, 2009, 3:06 PM

Here's a little challenge to all the people out there that loves to draw humans, and have lots of original characters.

Draw all your characters next to each other, wearing the same clothing, and without any hair on their heads.
Also try to take away tattoos, piercings, wings, cat-ears or other special features (this is up to you, though).

Then ask your watchers to identify the individual characters from each others. See if people actually get it right. :)

The purpose of this challenge is for people to learn to make their characters into individuals, that can be told apart without "having to look at the hair or costume". Good character artists make their characters so different that you immediately can tell them apart just on body shape and facial structure.

Note: If you don't have any original characters, you can also try it with fanart picking a series you like. This of course is less ideal, as most good shows have made their characters very different from the start. But it's still a very good challenge for a lot of people. Just be careful not to pick an anime/manga where all the characters literally only can be told apart by the hair. Sadly they are out there.

I'll be happy to post any drawings made from this challenge here, if you give me a link.

This does sound cool, an while I have a LOT of original characters, most of my watchers wouldn't know them because they're part of writings that I don't posted here. Besides that, I suck at humans.

I love you!....Yes, you!

Oh my gah. This is such a great idea! So great, in fact, that if I had photoshop or a scanner I would have started this very second. 8D
I'll do it later, though, because this just sounds like too fun of a challenge to pass up regardless of who has seen my characters or not.

Also, I was wondering if it was okay to put the ladies in something different from the men (of course all the men and women wear the same things just different from the opposite sex)? It's hard for me to draw gender neutral clothing and drawing them all in baggy pants would seem like it would defeat the purpose (which is the only gender neutral thing I could think of at the moment).

Well, seeing how most girls would clearly difference from guys by having boobs anyway, I don't really see a problem there. ;)

I'm afraid I'm not "naturally placed" eno8ugh among animal artists to give a suggestion on what to do there (although, trying to make them without colours, hair/tail and special markings could be a suggestion).
Anyway, I still think this practice can be great even if you just do it for yourself. Like mentioned this actually force you to consider how you can difference your characters from each other without using easy solutions like haircut and accessories.

This sounds so much fun .. Just sad that I don't have a lot of beautiful, funny original characters.. to bad for me.. ;)

Like mentioned, you can try to do it with other peoples characters as well if you really want to try. ;)
